WASHINGTON D.C. – Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the final conscience rule that protects physicians and other health care professionals from having to provide procedures against their conscience:

“I applaud today’s actions by President Trump and HHS Secretary Alex Azar finalizing the pro-life conscience protection rule for medical providers. We have technology that shows unborn children as living, breathing and feeling human beings. This is why I feel so strongly that no medical provider should be forced to perform an abortion or any other service that goes against their beliefs. We have come a long way the past two years to protect the unborn, and I am proud we have a president who strongly supports the right to life. I look forward to building on the progress we have already made.”

Note: Today, HHS issued a final rule to improve enforcement for approximately 25 existing statutes protecting a medical provider’s conscience when providing healthcare through HHS-funded programs. Congressman Roe is a longtime supporter of legislation that protects physicians and other medical professionals from being coerced into performing abortions when it goes against their beliefs, and is an original cosponsor of the H.R. 2014, the Conscience Protection Act, which protects these professions from such treatment.
