WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after the House failed to pass H.R. 4760, legislation to tackle our country’s growing illegal immigration problem:

“The legislation we considered today is everything East Tennesseans have been asking for, so I’m disappointed by in the outcome of today’s vote. The legislation would have included funding to secure our southern border; expanded e-Verify; ended catch and release; replaced the visa lottery program with a merit-based green card program; withheld federal grants from sanctuary cities; removed aliens who are engaged in gang related activities; and resolved the legal situation of immigrants who were brought here at a young age illegally but have grown up in America. These are all the things the president has said he would support. Enforcing our immigration laws is critical to ensuring the safety and security of our country, and I am hopeful that an additional bill being considered tomorrow will give us the opportunity to make progress on a sensible, fair immigration policy. It’s time for Democrats in Congress to join us in trying to find real, workable solutions that the president supports.”
