WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after President Trump signed an executive order to cease the separation of families detained after illegally crossing the U.S. border:

“Separating children from their parents is not something any of us want to see. President Trump was right to issue an executive order that keeps families together once they cross the border into the U.S. In fact, the House is preparing to vote on a comprehensive bill that will codify this policy. But the President is also right that what led to this crisis is the selective enforcement of our immigration laws, which has encouraged thousands of families trying to come into our country illegally. Immigration reform must begin with securing our border and enforcing the laws that we currently have, which is why the legislation we are considering also prioritizes securing our border and closing loopholes in our immigration laws that encourage illegal immigration. I look forward to working with the president and my colleagues in Congress to solve this important issue.”
