Roe Statement on Trump Administration’s Title X “Protect Life Rule”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement about the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Protect Life Rule, a proposed rule that will ensure Title X funding does not directly or indirectly encourage abortion:
“Protecting the unborn is a responsibility that I take very seriously, which is why I am grateful to President Trump and Secretary Azar for this proposed rule that will ensure there is a distinct physical and financial separation between Title X Family Planning federal grant programs and programs that perform abortion, like Planned Parenthood. Title X funds should go directly to providing essential care and planning services to women, not aid in providing abortions or advocating for abortions. Last month, I joined 152 of my colleagues in writing HHS Secretary Azar to urge the department to create separation between family planning centers and abortion centers so that Title X funds are not misused. As a doctor who delivered nearly 5,000 babies, I am a strong advocate for the right to life and believe life is a precious miracle that begins at conception. I will always support pro-life policies and do my best to protect the most innocent among us.”
Background: During the Reagan administration, Title X funding prohibited family planning facilities from referring or conducting abortions, except in life endangering circumstances. These regulations were in turn, reversed by the Clinton Administration. Click here to view the letter sent to HHS.
