WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-TN) released the following statement on H.R. 7, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act:
“As an OB/GYN who has delivered close to 5,000 babies, I strongly support the sanctity of life.
“Since 1976, Congress has prevented taxpayer funding for abortion. Unfortunately, this door was reopened with the passage of ObamaCare. This misguided law has, in addition to causing incredible harm to our health care system, potentially put taxpayers on the hook for funding the termination of innocent life. That’s why H.R. 7 is so important—it explicitly states that taxpayer dollars should not be used to fund abortions.
“Abortion is not a business our government should be involved in. As legislators, we carry the responsibility and privilege to protect those who do not have a voice. We must make our laws consistent with our science and ensure full legal protections to those who are waiting to be born. This starts with legislation like H.R. 7.
“One of government's core functions is to protect the most innocent among us, and I will do my best to ensure that government fulfills its duty. I will always fight for the right to life because it is my belief that we are unique creations of God who knows us and loves us even before we are conceived. I urge my colleagues to support this important legislation.”
