WASHINGTON D.C. – Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-TN) voted in support of H.R. 1797, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This legislation would prohibit abortions 20 weeks after fertilization.

Roe released the following statement on the legislation:

Before I came to Congress, I spent more than 30 years practicing medicine. I have delivered nearly 5,000 babies and I strongly support the sanctity of life.  I have seen human development occur from the earliest stages of a fetus all the way through birth, which strengthens my conviction in the right to life.

“Twenty weeks into a pregnancy babies have fingers, toes and some even begin to hiccup. They have developed nerve centers for their senses, meaning they can hear, taste, smell, see, and most importantly feel.

“As a legislator, it’s my responsibility and privilege to protect those who do not have a voice. I will always fight for the right to life because it is my belief that we are all unique creations of a God who knows and loves us before we are even conceived.”
