WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Phil Roe, M.D. (R-TN-01) and Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz (D-PA-13) will hold a bipartisan briefing and panel discussion on the future of the Medicare physician payment system. Since 2003, Congress has taken steps each year to override the cuts required by the flawed sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula. Unless Congress acts again before the end of this year, physicians treating Medicare patients will see their reimbursements cut by 29.5% beginning on January 1, 2012.

More than 115 members of Congress joined Schwartz and Roe in sending a bipartisan letter to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction asking that they include a comprehensive SGR fix in their proposal.

The briefing will feature the following three prominent health care experts who will discuss prospects for reforming or repealing the SGR:

  • Mark McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at the Brookings Institution
  • Joseph Antos, Ph.D., Wilson H. Taylor Scholar in Health Care and Retirement Policy at the American Enterprise Institute
  • Stuart Guterman, M.A., Vice President, Payment and System Reform at the Commonwealth Fund
