WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Democrats in the U.S. House passed H.R. 3534 – The CLEAR (Cutting Loose Energy and American Resources) Act under limited debate and restricted amendments. U.S. Congressman Phil Roe, M.D. (TN-01) said H.R. 3534 represents a blatantly political response to a serious problem. Roe noted that this bill will actually increase the price of American energy and kill good-paying U.S. jobs in the energy sector and related industries – ultimately making us even more dependent on foreign oil sources.

Congressman Roe issued the followings statement:

At a time of slow economic growth, this Congress should be focusing on creating American jobs, not killing them. Although I believe we should enact strong legislation to prevent future accidents like the Deepwater Horizon rig that resulted one of the worst oil spills in our history, this bill goes way beyond that objective – actually eliminating more energy jobs in our country.

This bill cripples us on our path to energy independence and only drives into deeper dependence on foreign oil. The CLEAR Act includes a new tax on oil and natural gas produced on all existing and new federal onshore and offshore American leases. It implements reckless new laws that will only result in billions of dollars in additional energy taxes; billions in new spending; and more American jobs sent overseas.

The 9.2 million jobs supported by American oil and natural gas are important, and we are clearly putting them at risk by raising taxes, blocking American energy development, continuing a moratorium on deepwater drilling and completely eliminating economic liability caps.
