WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Phil Roe, M.D. (TN-1), released the following statement on the Majority Democrats new health care bill, unveiled this morning:

"Many logically think that if you spend $900 billion, there will be a return on investment. However, House Democrats seem to be throwing money to the wind, hoping it works.

"This bill spends billions to expand Medicaid, even though patients currently on the program are still struggling to find a physician.

"This bill taxes job creators and the middle class at a time we can least afford it.

"This bill creates a government-run health system which will result in a national version of TennCare, which yields the result of millions of Americans losing their current coverage.

"This bill cuts Medicare by $500 billion even though we’re adding 30 million new beneficiaries in the next 10 years.

"The Democratic Leadership has called their “reform” package the result of an open and transparent process, but can there be anything less transparent than adding 900 pages of legislative text to a bill that has not been properly evaluated by House Committees?

"The fact is, none of the common sense reforms put forward by doctors in Congress, such as curbing frivolous lawsuits and allowing consumers to join together and purchase the best coverage anywhere in the nation, have not been included.

"While I will be reading the 1900+ page bill over the next week to find out what other problems are buried in the text, one thing is clear – this bill will lead to decreased access to care, decreased quality of care, and increased cost to beneficiaries. It needs to be rewritten before we do irreparable harm to our health care system."
