Roe Statement on the Approval of Legislation Approving the Location for the National Desert Storm and Desert Shield War Memorial Act
WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, the House of Representatives approved by unanimous consent S.J.Res. 1, a resolution approving a location in Area I on the National Mall for the National Desert Storm and Desert Shield War Memorial. Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.), who authored the House version of this joint resolution which had previously passed the House, issued the following statement regarding the bill:
“I thank House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Rob Bishop and the entire House of Representatives for acting on this important bill. The men and women who serve our country, both in the past and present, deserve to be honored with dignity and respect. This legislation will ensure the individuals who fought in Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield will have a memorial on the National Mall, like so many of their brothers and sisters in arms who served in prior conflicts. Their sacrifice will always be remembered through the building of this memorial.”Note: The United States currently lacks a national memorial dedicated to the service members who fought in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. All funds will be raised privately by the National Desert Storm War Memorial Association. Rep. Roe sponsored the legislation authorizing the memorial that was included as Section 3093 of P.L. 113-291, the Carl Levin and Howard P. “Buck” McKeon National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2015.
